Career -stenographers

QUALIFICATION : Matriculation + Shorthand Skill (difference of speed)CAREER IN STENOGRAPHERS IN CSSS: The following ladder is reserved for bright stenographers who entered in the service of various Ministries/Deptts. of the Government of India.

(1) Stenographer Grade D (Steno.): Direct Recruit
(2) Stenographer Grade C (PA) / Assistant Grade Equivalent : (Direct Recruit or through Limited Departmental Competitive Examinations (LDCE) conducted by the Staff Selection Commission for Grade D Stenographers only or Promotion)
(3) Private Secretaries (PS) /Section Officer (SO)Equivalent : Through LDCE conducted by the UPSC to PAs or Promotion
(4) Principal Private Secretaries(PPS) /Under Secretary Equivalent : About 6 years * as PS.
(5) Senior Principal Private Secretaries (Sr.PPS) /Deputy Secretary Equivalent: About 6 years as PPS.
(7) Principal Staff Officer (PSO) / Director Level: On Promotion from Sr. PPS after about 6 years of service.
* 6 years is for reserved categories . Generals are given chance in case of non-availability of reserved categories.

Keeping in view the promotional prospects, Stenographers entering have an outstanding career under the Central Secretariat Stenographers Service (CSSS). They are made as privileged as some Direct entry Group A officers with the exception of All India Services and some Group A services of the Civil Services exams since the creation of new post such as Principal Staff Officer post which is Director Level in the Departments/Ministries of the Government of India. Morever, SSC's Assistant Grades have the same good opportunity as PA with the ban of SO entry through the Civil Service exam. in CSS. For example, now direct recruits Grade C Stenographers (PAs) or Assistant Grades in Central Secretariats at an early age have better and brighter future in career prospects since they can also give UPSC's Private Secretary/Section Officer Examinations conducted annually by the UPSC. This exam. is esp. meant for PAs and Assistants and henceforth they have better chance of getting into top positions than some Group A posts conducted by UPSC/SCC's like Assistant Commandants/CDS, OTA, SO (Audits) and the Bank POs.




 Stenographers are generally attached to a certain officer or ministry for carrying out the stenography job and with timely passing of various departmental examinations, one can go higher in the grade.


  For promotions you need to clear the departmental exams/tests, which are generally conducted by UPSC.

 You can also change your cadre by this Internal Departmental Exam.

The promotions are as -

 Stenographer Grade C(PA)—> Private Secretaries(PS)—> Principal Private Secretaries(PPS)—> Senior Principal Private Secretaries(Sr.PPS)—>Principal Staff Officer(PSO)

  Steno Grade C are Assistant Grade Equivalent.

   Private Secretaries are Section Officer(SO) Equivalent.

   PPS are Under Secretary Equivalent.

   Sr.PPS are Deputy Secretary Equivalent.

   & Principal Staff Officer are Director Level.
